LEXINGTON, Va. – The 22nd-ranked Washington and Lee wrestling team moved to 5-0 for the first time in 56 years by sweeping a trio of matches in the W&L duals held at the Duchossois Tennis Center on Monday.
The Generals opened the day with a 31-9 win over Greensboro and then defeated Trine by a score of 27-20. The Blue & White finished the day with a 37-14 victory over Muskingum.
The last start of at least 5-0 occurred during the 1962-63 season, when W&L defeated the likes of North Carolina, Duke and N.C. State to begin the year with a 6-0 mark.
Five Generals finished the day with a 3-0 overall record led by first-year 133-pounder Charlie Cunningham (Pequannock, N.J. / Seton Hall Prep), who posted two wins by fall and another by decision. He is now 16-0 on the season.
First-year 141-pounder Russ Zimmerman (Mechanicsburg, Pa. / Cumberland Valley) logged a pair of wins by decision and one major decision to improve to 14-3 on the year, while classmate Ryan Luth (Milford, Conn. / Joseph A. Foran) improved to 17-1 overall with three wins. He opened with a major decision and added a win by fall and a win by forfeit.
Junior 174-pounder Joe Scott (Efland, N.C. / Orange) also went 3-0 to move his season record to 11-1. He logged one win by decision, one by major decision and another by fall.
The last W&L wrestler to finish with a 3-0 mark was first-year 197-pounder Brad Basham (Burlington, Mass. / Buckingham Browne & Nichols), who notched two wins by decision and another via technical fall. He is now 3-1 on the year.
Washington and Lee returns to action on January 5 when it hosts the Jim Crytzer Memorial Invitational at Southern Virginia. Action begins at 9:00 am.
