W&L Wrestling Posts a 2-1 Overall Record at the W&L Duals

LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee wrestling team posted wins over King's (26-19) and Trine (22-18), and fell to Ohio Northern (27-12) to finish with a 2-1 overall record in the W&L Duals on Monday at the Warner Center.

In the opening win over King's, the Generals grabbed the early lead, as sophomore Zach Bylykbashi (Southington, Conn. / Southington) pinned Christopher Coakley in 2:12 at 133 pounds.  Sophomore Michael Dik (Boxford, Mass. / St. John's Prep) followed with a 15-2 major decision over Matt Sparks at 141 pounds and junior Zachary Papin (Carrollton, Texas / St. Mark's) logged a pin (1:45) over Tony Immediato at 149 pounds.  First-year Shane Conners (Mount Airy, Md. / South Carroll) made it 22-4 with a pin (6:59) over Antonio Duardo at 157 pounds, while first-year Rexx Hallyburton (Bishop, Ga. / Oconee County) registered a 12-2 major decision over Nicholas Price at 184 pounds.

In the win over Trine, the teams were deadlocked a 9-9 until four straight wins gave the Generals a 19-9 edge.  Papin logged an exciting 11-10 victory over Caleb Maddox at 149 and Conners followed with a 13-4 major decision over Nick Miller at 157.  First-year Joe Scott posted a come-from-behind 11-7 win at 165 and junior Brandon Lefore (Morgan Hill, Calif. / Ann Sobrato) downed Austin Farrell, 7-5, at 174.  However, a win at 184 and a forfeit at 197 brought the Thunder to within 19-18 entering the heavyweight match.  Junior Matt Kaminer (Hewlett, N.Y. / George W. Hewlett) delivered the win with a 4-1 decision over Tyler Prater.

W&L held a 9-3 lead after three matches in the loss to Ohio Northern, with Bylykbashi picking up his second straight forfeit and Dik notching a 6-4 win at 141 pounds over Aidan Pierobon.  However, the Generals dropped several close matches and couldn't break through until Kaminer posted a 5-2 victory at 285 pounds.

Washington and Lee, now 2-3 on the season, will break for the holidays before returning to action on January 6 when it hosts John Carroll for a 6:30 pm dual match.  W&L will then host the Jim Crytzer Invitational the following morning beginning at 9:00 am.
