PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Washington and Lee men's swimming team fell to Carnegie Mellon, 191-71, but defeated Grove City, 189-102, on Saturday at the CMU Tri-Meet.
The Generals had nine Top 3 finishes, with junior Tommy Thetford (Birmingham, Ala. / The Altamont) taking a first and second place finish in individual events and a second-place finish in a relay.
Thetford placed first in the 50-yard free (21.77) and took second in the 100-yard free (47.71). First-year Sam Logue (Fallston, Md. / Loyola Blakefield) took third in the 100-yard free and third in the 100-yard fly with a time of 52.44.
Senior Jake Burns (Greensboro, N.C. / Greensboro Day) and first-year Evan Kramer (Taylors, S.C. / Eastside) joined Thetford and Logue on the 200-yard free relay that placed second after touching the wall at 1:26.80.
Junior Noah Schammel (Greenville, S.C. / St. Joseph's) claimed second in the 100-yard fly (52.33), while first-year Ethan Fischer (Columbus, Ohio / Upper Arlington) placed third in the 200-yard free (2:13.19). First-year William Borst (San Antonio, Texas / Ronald Reagan) took third in the 200-yard free with a time of 1:45.31.
Burns, seniors Trenton Babcock (Belmont, Mich. / Rockford) and Thomas Ferguson (Midlothian, Va. / Trinity Episcopal) and sophomore Patrick Lawrence (Columbus, Ohio / Bishop Hartley) swam on the 200-yard medley relay that took third with a time of 1:37.35.
W&L returns to the pool on November 18, when it travels to Lancaster, Pa., to participate in the three-day Franklin & Marshall Invitational.
