LEXINGTON, Va. — Sophomore Tommy Thetford (Birmingham, Ala. / The Altamont) won two individual events, recording two NCAA B cuts, and was a part of two winning relays to lead the Washington and Lee men's swimming team to a 171-109 victory over neighboring VMI on Saturday at Cy Twombly Pool.
Thetford won the 50 freestyle with a time of 20.10, which was a NCAA B cut and tied his collegiate-best time. In the 100 freestyle, he touched the wall first with another NCAA B cut at 45.49. He also set new pool records with his times in both events.
Thetford was a member of the 200 medley relay that placed first in 1:35.34. The quartet consisted of junior Andrew Botelho (Huntersville, N.C. / William Amos Hough), first-year Colin McKinnon (Fredericksburg, Va. / Chancellor), sophomore Noah Schammel (Greenville, S.C. / St. Joseph's Catholic School) and Thetford. The 200 freestyle relay also claimed first in 1:26.23. The foursome consisted of Botelho, senior Harris Pritchard (Houston, Texas / Memorial), junior Jake Burns (Greensboro, N.C. / Greensboro Day) and Thetford.
Schammel also won two individual events. He took first in the 100 butterfly in 52.53, and touched the wall first in the 200 butterfly (1:56.48). First-year Patrick Lawrence (Columbus, Ohio / Bishop Hartley) claimed two events. He won the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:01.96, and placed first in the 200 IM in 2:01.76.
Sophomore Jacob Rosen (Old Tappan, N.J. / Northern Valley Regional) won the 1000 freestyle in 10:26.88, while sophomore Thomas Caldwell (Greenville, S.C. / Wade Hampton) claimed first in the 500 freestyle (4:56.37). In the 200 freestyle, first-year Sam Childress (Springfield, Ill. / Glenwood) finished first with a time of 1:45.95, and Botelho won the 100 backstroke in 53.19.
In the 100 breaststroke, junior Trenten Babcock (Belmont, Mich. / Rockford) took the top spot in 1:01.28, and sophomore Corey Connelly (Palm Harbor, Fla. / Palm Harbor University) claimed first in the 200 breaststroke (2:17.06).
The Generals next compete at the ODAC Championship on February 12-14.
