PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Washington and Lee women's swimming team fell to Carnegie Mellon, 152-109, but defeated Allegheny, 217-34, on Saturday at the CMU Tri-Meet.
The Generals had 17 Top 3 finishes, with juniors Elisabeth Holmes (Raleigh, N.C. / Needham B. Broughton) and Emily Rollo (Haddonfield, N.J. / Haddonfield Memorial) each winning two individual events.
Holmes won the 200-yard freestyle (1:56.90) and the 500-yard freestyle (5:13.43), and had a third-place showing in the 100-yard freestyle (54.25). She was also a member of the 200-yard freestyle relay squad that came in second with a time of 1:40.99. Holmes was joined by first-year Elle Chancey (Tampa, Fla. / Berkeley Preparatory School), and seniors Stephanie Foster (Columbia, Md. / Long Reach) and Sarah Schaffer (Wheaton, Ill. / Wheaton Warrenville South).
Rollo claimed the 100-yard backstroke (59.05) and the 200-yard individual medley (2:14.39), and finished third in the 200-yard backstroke (2:12.24). She also participated on the 200-yard medley relay that touched the wall in 1:49.93 for second place. The quartet consisted of Rollo, Schaffer, Chancey and sophomore Kira Tomenchok (Richmond, Va. / Trinity Episcopal School).
Tomenchok recorded three Top 3 individual event finishes for W&L. She posted a victory in the 200-yard backstroke (2:11.46), earned second in the 100-yard backstroke (1:00.37) and took third in the 100-yard butterfly (1:00.42).
Chancey also had two second-place finishes in individual events. She clocked in at 25.02 for second in the 50-yard freestyle and finished second in the 100-yard freestyle in 54.12.
First-year Jordan Watson (Fayetteville, Ga. / Whitewater) claimed the top spot in the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:52.08 and touched the wall in 5:20.39, which was good for second in the 500-yard freestyle.
Sophomore Mara Tynan (Westford, Mass. / Westford Academy) also had a second-place showing for the Blue and White in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:13.91, while first-year Alison Murtagh (Andover, Mass. / Andover) placed third in the 1000-yard freestyle in 11:05.23.
W&L returns to the pool on November 20, when it travels to Lancaster, Pa. to participate in the three-day Franklin & Marshall Invitational.
