PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Washington and Lee men's swimming team knocked off Allegheny, 183-76, but was topped by Carnegie Mellon, 170-91, on Saturday at the CMU Tri-Meet.
W&L had 10 Top 3 showings, with sophomore Tommy Thetford (Birmingham, Ala. / The Altamont) claiming two individual events and participating on one winning relay.
Thetford posted victories in the 50-yard freestyle (21.15) and the 100-yard freestyle (46.97), and was a member of the 200-yard freestyle relay that finished in first place (1:27.62). The squad was made up of Thetford, sophomore John Carmody (West Des Moines, Iowa / Dowling Catholic), and juniors Andrew Botelho (Huntersville, N.C. / William Amos Hough) and Jake Burns (Greensboro, N.C. / Greensboro Day).
Thetford also swam on the 200-yard medley relay that placed second in 1:37.53. He was accompanied by first-year Patrick Lawrence (Columbus, Ohio / Bishop Hartley), sophomore Noah Schammel (Greenville, S.C. / St. Joseph's Catholic School) and junior Trenten Babcock (Belmont, Mich. / Rockford) on the quartet.
Lawrence and Schammel both had two second-place finishes in individual events as well for the Blue and White. Lawrence came in second in the 100-yard backstroke (56.04) and in the 200-yard backstroke (2:01.22). Schammel took second in the 100-yard butterfly (52.49) and in the 200-yard butterfly (1:51.74).
First-year Sam Childress (Springfield, Ill. / Glenwood) claimed the top spot in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:46.14, while sophomore Corey Connelly (Palm Harbor, Fla. / Palm Harbor University) touched the wall in 1:49.22 for third place.
The Generals return to the action on November 20, when they travel to Lancaster, Pa. to compete in the three-day Franklin & Marshall Invitational.
