ASHLAND, Va. – The Washington and Lee men's swimming team downed Randolph-Macon, 149.5-112.5, on Saturday at Estes Aquatic Center.
Sophomore Tommy Thetford (Birmingham, Ala. / The Altamont) led the Generals with two individual event wins and swam on one winning relay.
Thetford claimed the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 47.27 and took the top spot in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:46.57.
He also swam on the 200-yard freestyle relay squad that touched the wall in 1:27.04 for first place. Thetford was accompanied by sophomore John Carmody (West Des Moines, Iowa / Dowling Catholic), and juniors John Womack (Glendale, Ariz. / Glendale Preparatory Academy) and Jake Burns (Greensboro, N.C. / Greensboro Day).
Womack finished first in the 50-yard freestyle, clocking in at 22.10, and he and Burns participated on the 200-yard medley relay quartet that finished in 1:39.34 for first place. The pair was joined by first-years Patrick Lawrence (Columbus, Ohio / Bishop Hartley) and Colin McKinnon (Fredericksburg, Va. / Chancellor).
First-year Sam Childress (Springfield, Ill. / Glenwood) also had a first-place showing for W&L. He touched the wall in 10:19.14 to claim the 1000-yard freestyle event.
Washington and Lee returns to the pool on November 14 when it travels to Carnegie Mellon to take on the Tartans and Allegheny. The meet is set to begin at 10:00 am.
