FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The Washington and Lee women's swimming team fell to Mary Washington, 145-117, on Friday evening at Goolrick Hall.
Junior Elisabeth Holmes (Raleigh, N.C. / Needham B. Broughton) won two individual events for the Generals. She claimed the 200-yard freestyle (1:56.77) and the 500-yard freestyle (5:15.56), and was a part of the 200-yard freestyle relay that finished second with a time of 1:41.27. The squad consisted of Holmes, first-year Elle Chancey (Tampa, Fla. / Berkeley Preparatory School) and seniors Stephanie Foster (Columbia, Md. / Long Reach) and Sarah Schaffer (Wheaton, Ill. / Wheaton Warrenville South).
Schaffer and Chancey were also members of the 200-yard medley relay that touched the wall in 1:51.00 to take second place. They were joined by sophomore Kira Tomenchok (Richmond, Va. / Trinity Episcopal School) and junior Emily Rollo (Haddonfield, N.J. / Haddonfield Memorial).
Schaffer and Chancey had second-place finishes in individual events as well. Schaffer took second in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:11.22) and Chancey had a second-place showing in the 100-yard freestyle (54.28).
Rollo won the 100-yard backstroke (59.99) and finished second in the 200-yard backstroke (2:14.17), while Tomenchok took second place in the 100-yard back (1:01.02) and the 100-yard butterfly (1:01.86).
First-year Jordan Watson (Fayetteville, Ga. / Whitewater) claimed an event victory, touching the wall first in the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:55.01 and finished behind Holmes in the 500-yard freestyle for second in 5:24.27.
Sophomore Mara Tynan (Westford, Mass. / Westford Academy) and first-year Alison Murtagh (Andover, Mass. / Andover) also added second place showings for the Blue and White. Tynan placed second in the 200-yard butterfly in 2:16.69 and Murtagh finished second in the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 11:13.39.
The W&L women's swimming team returns to action on Saturday when it hosts the ODAC Relays at 12:00 pm.
