FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The Washington and Lee men's swimming team defeated Mary Washington, 160-102, on Friday evening at Goolrick Hall. The Generals had 10 event wins on the way to the victory.
Sophomore Tommy Thetford (Birmingham, Ala. / The Altamont) had two individual event victories and participated on one winning relay. Thetford claimed the 50-yard freestyle (21.07) and the 100-yard freestyle (47.55). He also swam on the 200-yard freestyle relay quartet that clocked in at 1:27.20 for first place. Thetford was joined by sophomore John Carmody (West Des Moines, Iowa / Dowling Catholic) and juniors John Womack (Glendale, Ariz. / Glendale Preparatory Academy) and Jake Burns (Greensboro, N.C. / Greensboro Day).
First-years Sam Childress (Springfield, Ill. / Glenwood) and Patrick Lawrence (Columbus, Ohio / Bishop Hartley) also claimed two individual events. Childress finished first in the 200-yard freestyle (1:48.18) and the 500-yard freestyle (4:56.61), while Lawrence won the 100-yard backstroke (56.02) and the 200-yard backstroke (2:02.52).
Sophomore Noah Schammel (Greenville, S.C. / St. Joseph's Catholic School) took the top spot in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 53.57 and the 200-yard butterfly in 1:58.54.
First-year Bancks Holmes (Raleigh, N.C. / Needham B. Broughton) also had a first-place showing. Holmes was victorious in the 1000-yard freestyle, touching the wall in 10:19.48.
The Generals return to the pool on October 24 when they travel to Randolph-Macon for a 1:00 pm meet.
