LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee women's swimming team claimed 10 events in its victories over VMI and Ferrum in a tri-meet held at Clark King Pool on Saturday afternoon. The Generals defeated the Keydets, 163-66, and took down the Panthers, 181-44.
The 200-yard medley relay squad that consisted of first-years Kira Tomenchok (Richmond, Va. / Trinity Episcopal School) and Katie Gardner (Irvington, N.Y. / Irvington), senior Caroline Hamp (Avon Lake, Ohio / Elyria Catholic) and sophomore Emily Rollo (Haddonfield, N.J. / Haddonfield Memorial) touched the wall in 1:52.37 for first-place honors.
In addition to swimming on the winning relay squad, Tomenchok, Hamp and Rollo also claimed individual events. Tomenchok took the 100-yard butterfly (1:01.23), Hamp had a first-place finish in the 100-yard backstroke (1:03.00) and Rollo won the 400-yard IM (4:48.37).
First-year Claire Meyers (Dayton, Ohio / Chaminade Julienne Catholic) earned two first-place finishes in individual events. She touched the wall in 1:10.74 in the 100-yard breaststroke and clocked in at 2:37.05 in the 200-yard breaststroke.
First-years Shannon Belforti (Colts Neck, N.J. / Red Bank Catholic) and Mara Tynan (Westford, Mass. / Westford Academy) were also among the individual event winners. Belforti finished first in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 25.25 and Tynan finished the 500-yard freestyle in 5:24.38 for first.
Sophomores Elisabeth Holmes (Raleigh, N.C. / Needham B. Broughton), Haylee Rademann (Folsom, Calif. / St. Francis) and Abigail Sterns (Brussels, Belgium / Orcutt Academy – Brussels American School) also finished first for the Generals (8-1). Holmes won the 200-yard freestyle (1:57.06) and Rademann claimed the 200-yard butterfly (2:15.92), while Sterns took the 200-yard backstroke (2:15.88).
Junior Sarah Schaffer (Wheaton, Ill. / Wheaton Warrenville South) finished first in the 100-yard freestyle, touching the wall in 56.19.
W&L returns to the pool on February 13, when it travels to the Greensboro Aquatics Center to participate in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Championship.
