LEXINGTON, Va. – An impressive showing from first-year Kira Tomenchok (Richmond, Va. / Trinity Episcopal School) helped the Washington and Lee women's swim team to a 153-100 victory over Catholic on Saturday afternoon at the Cy Twombly pool.
Tomenchok was a part of setting two pool records, claiming two individual events and swimming on one winning relay.
Tomenchok broke the pool record in the 100-yard backstroke that had stood since 1983, touching the wall first in 59.84. She also took the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:00.95 and she participated on the 400-yard medley relay squad that broke the pool record from 1999, clocking in at 4:03.90. Tomenchok was joined by first-year Katie Gardner (Irvington, N.Y. / Irvington), senior Caroline Hamp (Avon Lake, Ohio / Elyria Cathoic) and sophomore Elisabeth Holmes (Raleigh, N.C. / Needham B. Broughton).
Holmes also claimed two event wins, finishing first in the 100-yard freestyle (55.25) and taking the 500-yard freestyle (5:18.32). Gardner won the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:09.00.
Sophomore Emily Rollo (Haddonfield, N.J. / Haddonfield Memorial) also earned two first-place finishes. She won the 200-yard freestyle (1:59.82) and the 200-yard individual medley (2:14.16).
Senior Sydney Gay (Henrico, Va. / Henrico) took the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 11:21.63, while first-year Mara Tynan (Westford, Mass. / Westford Academy) claimed the 200-yard butterfly in 2:14.74.
Junior Emma Swabb (Erie, Pa. / McDowell) finished first in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:17.01.
W&L returns to the pool on January 24, when it travels to VMI to take on the Keydets and Ferrum for a 1:00 pm meet.
