LEXINGTON, Va. – Sophomore Elisabeth
Holmes (Raleigh, N.C. / Needham B. Broughton) set a new Cy
Twombly pool record in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of
1:56.23, as the Washington and Lee women's swimming team defeated
Bridgewater, 134-60, on Saturday afternoon.
Holmes also competed on the 200-yard freestyle relay that
finished first (1:42.06) and the 200-yard medley relay that took
second (1:52.90). She was joined by sophomore Emily Rollo
(Haddonfield, N.J. / Haddonfield Memorial), first-year Kira Tomenchok
(Richmond, Va. / Trinity Episcopal School) and sophomore Natalie
Brendsel (Oakton, Va. / Flint Hill) on the 200-yard freestyle relay
squad and the 200-yard medley relay quartet consisted of Tomenchok
and first-years Claire Meyers
(Dayton, Ohio / Chaminade Julienne Catholic) and Mara Tynan
(Westford, Mass. / Westford Academy).
Brendsel claimed two individual events. She placed first in the
50-yard freestyle (25.07) and in the 100-yard freestyle (56.65).
Tynan touched the wall in 5:24.44 to win the 500-yard
freestyle.
Rollo also won one individual event and competed on another
winning relay. Rollo took the 200-yard backstroke with a time of
2:12.42, and was part of the 200-yard medley relay with juniors Sarah
Schaffer (Wheaton, Ill. / Wheaton Warrenville South) and Stephanie
Foster (Columbia, Md. / Long Reach) and senior Caroline Hamp
(Avon Lake, Ohio / Elyria Catholic) that touched the wall in
1:57.36.
Junior Meredith
Murphy (Hillsboro, Calif. / Saint Ignatius College Prep)
notched a first-place finish in the 200-yard butterfly with a time
of 2:17.44. In the 200-yard breaststroke, senior Mary Gabe (Mequon,
Wis. / Homestead) finished first, touching the wall in 2:37.57.
Junior Lizz
Platt (DuBois, Pa. / Dubois Area) took the 1000-yard freestyle
in 11:25.73. Junior Emma Swabb (Erie,
Pa. / McDowell) placed first in the 200-yard IM with a time of
2:17.12.
Foster and Schaffer each had a second-place finish. Foster
placed second in the 200-yard IM (2:18.98) and Schaffer finished
second in the 200-yard freestyle (2:00.66). Senior Sydney Gay
(Henrico, Va. / Henrico) earned second in the 1000-yard freestyle
(11:32.62).
W&L returns to the pool on January 17, when it hosts
Catholic for a 1:00 pm meet.
