PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- Sophomore Elisabeth Holmes (Raleigh, N.C. / Needham B. Broughton) won three individual events and first-year Kira Tomenchok (Richmond, Va. / Trinity Episcopal School) won two as the Washington and Lee women's swimming team went 1-1 in a tri-meet at Carnegie Mellon on Saturday.
The fourteenth-ranked Generals (4-1) fell to the ninth-ranked Tartans, 153-109, and defeated Allegheny, 212-48.
Holmes posted wins in the 1000 free (10:50.01), the 100 free (54.16) and the 500 free (5:15.38), while Tomenchok was victorious in the 100 back (58.75) and 200 back (2:07.83). She also added a second-place finish in the 100 fly with a time of 1:00.47.
First-year Katie Gardner (Irvington, N.Y. / Irvington) also claimed an event victory, touching first in 1:08.56 in the 100 breast and placing third in the 200 breast (2:33.46).
Sophomore Emily Rollo (Haddonfield, N.J. / Haddonfield Memorial) had three Top 3 finishes on the day. She placed second in the 50 free with a time of 25.44 and finished third in both the 200 back (2:12.32) and the 400 IM (4:47.89).
Junior Sarah Schaffer (Wheaton, Ill. / Wheaton Warrenville South) placed second in the 200 free (2:01.01) and first-year Mara Tynan (Westford, Mass. / Westford Academy) finished as the runner-up in the 200 fly with a time of 2:13.75.
Both W&L relays finished second on the day. The 200 medley relay of junior Stephanie Foster (Columbia, Md. / Long Reach), Gardner, senior Caroline Hamp (Avon Lake, Ohio / Elyria Catholic) and Rollo touched in 1:50.82 and the 200 free relay team consisting of Holmes, Schaffer, Foster and sophomore Natalie Brendsel (Oakton, Va. / Flint Hill) finished in 1:41.65.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Friday as it competes in the three-day Franklin & Marshall Invitational.
