LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee men's swimming team won eight events in its 149-110 victory over Randolph-Macon on Saturday afternoon at Cy Twombly Pool.
First-year Tommy Thetford (Birmingham, Ala. / The Altamont) led the Generals with two individual wins and participated on a winning relay. He touched the wall first in the 50 yard freestyle (21.30) and in the 100 yard freestyle (48.17).
The 200 yard medley relay finished first with a time of 1:38.87. Thetford was joined by senior Alex Cram (Columbia, S.C. / Irmo), and sophomores Trenten Babcock (Belmont, Mich. / Rockford) and Thomas Ferguson (Midlothian, Va. / Trinity Episcopal).
Ferguson also notched first in the 200 yard butterfly (2:04.53) and second in the 100 yard butterfly (54.59). Babcock finished second in the 100 yard breaststroke with a time of 1:03.00.
In the 1000 yard freestyle, sophomore Jamie Hayes (Chattanooga, Tenn. / McCallie School) claimed first in 10.29.00.
First-years Corey Connelly (Palm Harbor, Fla. / Palm Harbor University), Thomas Caldwell (Greenville, S.C. / Wade Hampton) and Noah Schammel (Greenville, S.C. / St. Joseph's Catholic school) all secured a first and second-place finish. Connelly (Palm Harbor, Fla. / Palm Harbor University) notched a first-place finish in the 200 yard freestyle (1:50.19), and followed with a second-place finish in the 200 yard breaststroke (2:21.42).
Caldwell claimed the 500 yard freestyle (5:02.32), and finished second in the 1000 yard freestyle (10:29.52). Schammel took the 100 yard butterfly (54.03), and placed second in the 200 yard freestyle (1:50.78).
The Generals return to the pool on Nov. 7 when they travel to Sweet Briar to take on Hampden-Sydney for a 6:00 pm meet.
