LEXINGTON, Va. — The 200-yard medley relay set a new Cy Twombly Pool record, as the Washington and Lee women's swimming team defeated Mary Washington, 154-105, on Friday. The Generals claimed nine event wins on the way to the victory.
The relay took first with a time of 1:42.44 to set the new mark. The quartet consisted of junior Stephanie Foster (Columbia, Md./Long Reach), junior Sarah Schaffer (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton Warrenville South), first-year Shannon Belforti (Red Bank, N.J./Red Bank Catholic) and sophomore Elisabeth Holmes (Raleigh, N.C./Needham B. Broughton).
Including the relay, Holmes claimed four event wins. She also placed first in the 1000-yard freestyle (10:48.57), the 200-yard freestyle (1:57.34) and the 500-yard freestyle (5:15.70).
First-year Kira Tomenchok (Richmond, Va./Trinity Episcopal School) claimed two victories, touching the wall first in the 100-yard backstroke in 1:01.10 and the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:12.63. First-year Katie Gardner (Irvington, N.Y./Irvington) also won two events. She claimed the 100-yard breaststroke (1:08.70) and the 200-yard breaststroke (2:31.95).
W&L also took first in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:51.35. The foursome included Foster, Gardner, senior Caroline Hamp (Avon Lake, Ohio/Elyria Catholic) and sophomore Emily Rollo (Haddonfield, N.J./Haddonfield Memorial).
The Generals host the ODAC Relays on Saturday at 12:00 pm.
