W&L Men's Swimming Defeats Catholic and Marymount

WASINGTON, D.C. – The Washington and Lee men's swim team picked up nine first-place finishes as they took down Catholic and Marymount in the dual-meet at the DuFour Center.

Sophomore Matt Kiser (Dunwoody, Ga. / Dunwoody) earned the first top finish for the Generals, touching the wall in a time of 1:49.54 in the 200 free. First-year Cole Schott (Nashville, Tenn. / Hume-Fogg Academic) (1:51.22) and Sophomore William Fries (Kirkwood, Mo. / Kirkwood) (1:51.45) finished second and third, respectively.

Senior David Ireland (Dayton, Ohio / Oakwood) continued W&L's success when he clocked in at 1:01.37 in the 100 breast to take home the top spot. The Generals increased their point total by finishing one-two-three in the 200 fly. Senior Eric Shuman (Black Mountain, N.C. / Asheville Christian Academy) (2:02.50) finished first, first-year Thomas Ferguson (Midlothian, Va. / Trinity Episcopal) (2:02.52) placed second and sophomore Alex Fox (Winston Salem, N.C. / RJ Reynolds) (2:07.93) finished third.

In the 100 free, three Generals took home a top-three finish, led by first-year John Womack (Glendale, Ariz. / Glendale Preparatory Academy) (49.60), Kiser (50.22) and first-year Jake Burns (Greensboro, N.C. / Greensboro Day) (50.57).

Ireland earned his second top spot of the day, finishing first in the 200 breast in a time of 2:15. 46. Once again, W&L swept the board, with first-year Trenton Babcock (Belmont, Mich. / Rockford) taking second (2:17.87) and first-year Chris Myers (Essex, Conn. / Valley Regional) finishing third (2:20.33).

The Generals finished the individual events strong by taking first, second and third place in the 100 fly and first in the 200 IM. In the 100 fly, Ireland came in first (54.79), senior Matthew Hesser (Midlothian, Va. / Governor's School) came in second (54.81) and Ferguson came in third (56.89).

The relays were a success for the Generals as well. The 200 medley relay team of Hesser, Ireland, Ferguson and Burns came in second in a time of 1:39.82, while the 400 free relay team of Womack, Kiser, Burns and sophomore Harris Pritchard (Houston, Texas / Memorial) took home first in a time of 3:17.70.

The Blue and White will be back in action when it hosts VMI and Ferrum next Saturday for a 12:00 pm meet.
