W&L Men's Swimming Earns Win at Carnegie Mellon Invitational

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Washington and Lee men's swimming team competed in a tri-meet on Saturday afternoon at Carnegie Mellon.  The Generals dropped a 180-77 decision to the fifth-ranked Tartans, but posted a 170-89 win over Allegheny to improve to 4-2 on the season.

First-year Jake Burns (Greensboro, N.C. / Greensboro Day) was the Generals' top performer on the day.  He swam on the first-place finishing 400 free relay (3:20.58) and second-place finishing 200 medley relay (1:39.98) teams, and also claimed third-place in the 100 free with a time of 49.09. 

Burns was joined on the 400 free relay by first-years John Womack (Glendale, Ariz. / Glendale Preparatory Academy) and Andrew Botelho (Huntersville, N.C. / William Amos Hough), and sophomore Matt Kiser (Dunwoody, Ga. / Dunwoody).  He swam the anchor leg of the 200 medley relay and was joined by seniors Matt Hesser (Midlothian, Va. / Governor's School) and David Ireland (Dayton, Ohio / Oakwood), and first-year Thomas Ferguson (Midlothian, Va. / Trinity Episcopal).

W&L swept the top three placings in the 400 free relay, with the team of sophomores Harris Pritchard (Houston, Texas / Memorial) and Wesley Sigmon (Raleigh, N.C. / Cardinal Gibbons), first-year Christopher Myers (Essex, Conn. / Valley Regional) and sophomore William Fries (Kirkwood, Mo. / Kirkwood) finishing second with a time of 3:25.90.  The squad consisting of first-years Harrison Westgarth (McKinney, Texas / McKinney) and James Hayes (Chattanooga, Tenn. / McCallie School), senior Eric Shuman (Black Mountain, N.C. / Asheville Christian Academy) and junior Alex Cram (Columbia, S.C. / Irmo) placed third in 3:27.59. 

Others finishing in the top three for the Generals were Hesser, who finished third in the 100 back (55.25) and first-year Trent Babcock (Belmont, Mich. / Rockford), who placed third in the 200 IM (2:05.30).

Washington and Lee will return to action on Friday and Saturday when it participates in the Franklin & Marshall Invitational.  Action begins with the prelims at 10:00 am.
