LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee men's swimming team claimed both relays and nine individual events en route to a pair of team wins on Saturday at the Cy Twombly Pool.
The Generals defeated Marymount by a score of 178-61 and notched a 168-86 win over Catholic in improving to 7-2 on the season.
Seniors Rick Sykes (Wellesley, Mass. / Wellesley) and Wayde Marsh (Milford, Del. / Salesianum School) both finished with impressive days that included two individual wins each and swimming on two winning relay teams.
Sykes notched a pool record in the 50 free, touching in 20.50 to finish first overall. He also won the 100 free with a time of 47.18. Marsh won the 100 back (53.00) and also claimed the 200 back with a time of 1:57.27.
Marsh led off the 200 medley relay squad that finished first in 1:36.63. He was joined by first-years Wesley Sigmon (Raleigh, N.C. / Cardinal Gibbons) and Brennan Haley (Westfield, N.J. / Westfield), and Sykes swam the anchor leg. Sykes led off the winning 400 free relay (3:15.20) and was joined by junior Robert Knuth (Virginia Beach, Va. / Cape Henry Collegiate) and senior Tyler Gehrs (Alexandria, Va. / St. Andrew's), while Marsh swam the anchor leg.
Gehrs added a win in the 200 free with a time of 1:46.17, while Sigmon won the 100 breast in 1:03.82. Sophomore Alex Cram (Columbia, S.C. / Irmo) won the 1000 free (10:28.30), first-year Alex Fox (Winston Salem, N.C. / RJ Reynolds) won the 200 fly (2:02.64) and junior David Ireland (Dayton, Ohio / Oakwood) won the 200 breast with a time of 2:17.36.
Washington and Lee will return to the pool next weekend as it competes at cross-town rival VMI. The meet is slated to begin at 1:00 pm.
