PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Washington and Lee men's swimming team was in action on Saturday at Carnegie Mellon. The Generals defeated both Rochester (173.50-88.50) and Allegheny (166-96), but fell to CMU, 132.50-129.50.
Leading the way for the Generals was senior Rick Sykes (Wellesley, Mass. / Wellesley), who swam on the winning 400 free relay team (3:13.60) and the second-place 200 medley relay squad (1:36.86). He also won the 50 free (20.79) and the 100 free (47.18).
Sykes was joined by senior Tyler Gehrs (Alexandria, Va. / St. Andrew's), junior Robert Knuth (Virginia Beach, Va. / Cape Henry Collegiate) and first-year Harris Pritchard (Houston, Texas / Memorial) on the 400 free relay team, while senior Wayde Marsh (Milford, Del. / Salesianum School), junior David Ireland (Dayton, Ohio / Oakwood) and first-year Brennan Haley (Westfield, N.J. / Westfield) all took part in the 200 medley relay.
Marsh added a pair of individual wins and a second-place showing, to go along with the second-place finish in the 200 medley relay. He won the 100 back in 53.19, touched first in the 200 back with a time of 1:56.07, and finished second in the 200 IM (2:02.54).
Other top performances included a trio of third-place showings. Gehrs touched third in the 100 free (48.44), Ireland finished third in the 200 breast (2:15.92) and junior Matt Hesser (Midlothian, Va. / Governor's School) placed third in the 200 IM (2:02.78).
Washington and Lee returns to action on Dec. 1-2 when it participates in the Randolph-Macon Invitational.
