W&L Men's Swimming Downs Randolph-Macon, 145-103

LEXINGTON, Va. – Senior Rick Sykes (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley) recorded an NCAA B-cut time of 20.90 in the 50 free to lead the Washington and Lee men's swimming team to a 145-103 win over Randolph-Macon on Saturday afternoon in Cy Twombly Pool.

Sykes took first place in the 50 free with his time and also finished in first place in the 100 free with a time of 46.85.

The Generals swept the Top 3 in two events. With Sykes leading in the 100 free, first-year Harris Pritchard (Houston, Texas/Memorial) was runner-up (50.56) and junior Robert Knuth (Virginia Beach, Va./Cape Henry Collegiate) finished in third place (50.59).

Junior David Ireland (Dayton, Ohio/Oakwood) led a three-man pack in the 100 breast, clocking in at 1:01.93 for first place. Pritchard took second, touching the wall in 1:05.71 and junior Philip Dishuck (Tuscaloosa, Ala./Holy Spirit Catholic) finished right behind in third (1:05.98).

W&L ended the day with six more first-place performances, including first-place finishes by first-years William Fries (Kirkwood, Mo./Kirkwood), Matt Kiser (Dunwoody, Ga./Dunwoody) and Alex Fox (Winston-Salem, N.C./Reynolds). Fries finished in the top spot in the 1000 free (10:21.37), Kiser was first in the 200 free (1:50.94) and Fox placed first in the 200 fly (2:02.97).

Other first-place times were by junior David Ireland (Dayton, Ohio/Oakwood) in the 200 breast (2:17.48) and senior Wayde Marsh (Milford, Del./Salesianum School) in the 100 back (54.63).

Several Generals finished in second-place in their respective events. First-year Wesley Sigmon (Raleigh, N.C./Cardinal Gibbons) took second in both the 200 breast (2:20.58) and 100 back (56.14), sophomore Chase Flint (Suwanee, Ga./Greater Atlanta Christian) was runner-up in the 200 free (1:51.48), junior Matt Hesser (Midlothian, Va./Governor's School) placed second in the 200 fly (2:03.00), and first-years Brody Lawson (Basking Ridge, N.J./Ridge) and Brennan Haley (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) finished second in the 1000 free (10:31.40) and 200 back (2:00.36), respectively.

W&L notched their final first-place finish in the 200 medley relay, as a Marsh, Sigmon, Haley and Sykes teamed up to clock in at 1:34.00.

The Generals return to the pool on November 2, when they face Wingate, Queens, Limestone, Catawba and Gardner Webb at the Mecklenburg Aquatic Center in Charlotte, N.C.
