W&L Men's Swimming Takes Down Mary Washington, 143-119

LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee men's swimming team claimed seven first-place finishes in a 143-119 win over Mary Washington on Friday evening at Cy Twombly Pool.

First-year Alex Fox (Winston Salem, N.C./RJ Reynolds) and senior Wayde Marsh (Milford, Del./Salesianum School) led the Generals with two individual victories each on the night. Fox touched the wall first in the 1000 free in a time of 10:21.00 and then took first in the 500 free (4:58.66). Marsh clocked in at 53.63 in the 100 back to take the top spot and was also first in the 200 back  (1:58.02).

Senior Rick Sykes (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley) also finished first in the 50 free in a time of 21.09.

Two relays finished in first-place, including the team of Marsh, Sykes and first-years Wesley Sigmon (Raleigh, N.C./Cardinal Gibbons) and Brennan Haley (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) timing in at 1:37.16 in the 200 medley relay. The 200 free relay made up of Sykes, senior Tyler Gehrs (Alexandria, Va./St. Andrew's), junior Robert Knuth (Virginia Beach, Va./Cape Henry Collegiate) and first-year Harris Pritchard (Houston, Texas/Memorial) touched the wall in first in the 200 free relay, with a time of 1:26.82.

With Fox leading the way in the 500 free, W&L filled the top-three spots with first-year Brody Lawson (Basking Ridge, N.J./Ridge) in second place (5:01.26) and first-year William Fries (Kirkwood, Mo./Kirkwood) rounding out the top-three (5:01.77).

Sykes, Fox, Fries, Haley and Lawson each registered runner-up performances on the night. Sykes was second in the 100 free (47.40), Fox finished second in the 200 fly (2:03.18), Fries touched second in the 200 free (1:48.98), Haley timed in at 54.99 in the 100 fly for second place and Lawson backed up Fox in the 1000 free with a time of 10:23.79.

Other top performances included a time of 2:15.57 by senior David Ireland (Dayton, Ohio/Oakwood) in the 200 breast for second place and junior Matt Hesser (Midlothian, Md./Governor's School) placing in second in the 200 IM (2:04.15).

The Generals return to the pool on October 27, when they host Randolph-Macon, set to begin at 1:00 pm.
