W&L Women's Swimming Goes 1-1 in Season Opener

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Washington and Lee women's swimming team opened its 2012-13 campaign with a 1-1 finish on the day after defeating Centre,184-78, and falling to DePauw, 157-134, on Saturday afternoon.

Five individuals earned event wins on the day, including two victories by first-year Stephanie Foster (Columbia, Md./Long Reach). Foster finished in the top spot in the 100 and 200 back, clocking in at 1:01.87 and 2:14.30, respectively.

Other first-place finishers were senior Izzy Brassfield (Greensboro, N.C./Greensboro Day School) in the 50 free (25.19), sophomore Caroline Hamp (Avon Lake, Ohio/Elyria Catholic) in the 100 fly (1:00.18) and first-year Meredith Murphy (Hillsboro, Calif./Saint Ignatius College Prep) in the 200 fly (2:15.56).

In the 1000 free, three Generals placed in the Top 5, with senior Kelly Mae Ross (Endicott, N.Y./Maine-Endwell) leading the way in third in a time of 11:21.18. Sophomore Sydney Gay (Henrico, Va./Henrico) finished in fourth place (11:37.36) and first-year Lindsey Gilbert (Libertyville, Ill./Libertyville) was fifth (11:37.80).

Sophomore Hannah Melkun (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford) finished second in both the 100 breast and 200 breast, touching in at 1:11.72 and 2:34.40, respectively.

First-year Emma Swabb (Erie, Pa./McDowell) ended the day with three Top-4 performances in her debut as a General, including second place in the 200 IM in a time of 2:17.29.  Swabb also placed third in the 200 breast (2:39.09) and fourth in the 100 breast (1:13.25).

Senior Delaney Rolfe (Dallas, Texas/Highland Park) registered two Top-3 times with second place in the 200 free (2:00.20) and third in the 500 free (5:22.78). Other performances in the Top 3 include third place in the 200 IM by first-year Lauren Stone (Paul, Ill./New Trier) in a time of 2:19.44 and a third-place time by first-year Sarah Schaffer (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton Warrenville South) in the 100 free (56.77).

In the 200 medley relay, Foster, Swabb, Hamp and Brassfield teamed up to take second place, touching in at 1:53.76. The 400 free relay also placed second with a time of 3:41.72, featuring Rolfe, Schaffer, Brassfield and junior Meredith Hardy (Cary, N.C./Athens Drive).

The Generals return to the pool on Friday, when they host Mary Washington at Cy Twombly Pool, set to begin at 6:00 pm.
