CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Washington and Lee men's swimming
team competed in a four-team meet on Friday and Saturday at the
Mecklenburg Aquatics Center. The Generals posted a 203-110
win over Catawba, but fell to both Wingate (230-85) and Queens
(201-114).
Individually for the Generals (4-2), sophomore David Ireland (Dayton,
Ohio/Oakwood) produced the highest finish when he touched second in
the 200 breast with a time of 2:10.77. Ireland also placed
fourth in the 100 breast (1:01.15) and he competed on the 200
(1:36.55) and 400 (3:35.91) medley relay teams that placed third
and fourth, respectively. He was joined on the 200 medley
relay team by junior Wayde Marsh (Milford,
Del./Salesianum School), senior Brian Stirling
(Skillman, N.J./Montgomery) and junior Rick Sykes (Wellesley,
Mass./Wellesley). Marsh, Brian Stirling and senior Jeff Stirling
(Skillman, N.J./Montgomery) all competed on the 400 medley relay
squad.
Brian Stirling added a third-place finish in the 100 fly (51.31)
and a fifth-place finish in the 100 free (48.07), and also competed
on the 200 (1:25.99) and 400 (3:14.63) free relay teams that
finished in third- and fifth-place, respectively. Sykes,
sophomore Robert
Knuth (Virginia Beach, Va./Cape Henry Collegiate) and junior Tyler Gehrs
(Alexandria, Va./St. Andrew's) joined Stirling on the 200 free
relay team, while Gehrs, senior Ryan Hartman (Yorktown,
Va./Grafton) and Sykes also participated on the 400 free relay
squad.
Sykes added a third-place finish in the 50 free with a time of
21.53, while Jeff Stirling placed fourth in the 100 fly with a time
of 51.97.
Senior Chris
Washnock (Greer, S.C./Greenville) finished third in the 400 IM
(4:15.26) and was fifth in both the 200 IM (2:01.74) and 200 breast
(2:20.36) events.
Sophomores Eric
Shuman (Black Mountain, N.C./Asheville Christian Academy) and
Matt Hesser
(Midlothian, Va./Governor's School) rounded out the Generals' top
performances across the two-day meet. Shuman finished fourth
in the 200 fly (1:59.89) and Hesser placed fourth in the 400 IM
with a time of 4:17.61.
Washington and Lee will return to action on November 19 when it
travels to Carnegie Mellon for a double-dual with the host Tartans
and Allegheny. Action begins at 11:30 am.
