PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Washington and Lee men's swimming
team posted a 2-1 record in meets with Carnegie Mellon, Rochester
and Allegheny on Saturday afternoon at CMU's University Center.
The Generals (6-3) defeated Rochester (173.5-88.5) and Allegheny
(166-96), but fell to Carnegie Mellon in a close one,
132.5-129.5.
Washington and Lee took both relays at the meet, winning the 200
medley relay in 1:36.32 and posting a time of 3:11.97 to win the
400 free relay.
Junior Wayde
Marsh (Milford, Del./Salesianum School) led off the 200 medley
relay and was followed by sophomore David Ireland (Dayton,
Ohio/Oakwood), senior Jeff Stirling
(Skillman, N.J./Montgomery) and junior Rick Sykes (Wellesley,
Mass./Wellesley).
Sykes then led off the 400 free relay squad and was joined by
senior Ryan
Hartman (Yorktown, Va./Grafton), junior Tyler Gehrs (Alexandria,
Va./St. Andrew's) and senior Brian Stirling
(Skillman, N.J./Montgomery).
Individually, Ireland won the 200 breast (2:11.00) and finished
second in the 100 breast (1:00.07), while Sykes won the 50 free
with a time of 21.01. Sykes also finished third in the 100
free with a time of 47.84.
Brian Stirling added second place finishes in the 200 free
(1:45.41), the 100 free (47.61) and the 100 fly (51.13), and senior
Chris Washnock
(Greer, S.C./Greenville) also finished second in the 200 back
(1:56.05) and the 200 IM (1:59.54). Additionally, Marsh
touched second in the 100 back with a time of 53.77.
Washington and Lee will return to action on December 2-3 as it
competes in the Gettysburg Invitational. Action begins on
Friday at 7:00 pm.
