Men's Swim Kicks Off Season with a 170-86 Win Over Centre

LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee men's swim team clamed the top spot in each of the 14 events during its dual meet against Centre College as it swam to a 170-86 triumph over the Colonels on Saturday afternoon at Cy Twombly Pool.

In addition to its 14 event victories, W&L (1-0) also took the top three spots in four events.

Swimming the 200 free, senior Brian Stirling (Skillman, N.J./Montgomery) finished in first with a time of 1:47.26, and was followed by first-year Chase Flint (Suwanee, Ga./Greater Atlanta Christian) in second place (1:49.29) and junior Wayde Marsh (Milford, Del./Salesianum) in third place (1:51.33).

The Generals swept the top three spots in the next event, with sophomore Matt Hesser (Midlothian, Va./Governor's School) finishing  in first (55.30), senior Brad Harder (Redding, Conn./Joel Barlow) finishing in second (56.56) and first-year Alex Cram (Columbia, S.C./Irmo) finishing in third (57.84) in the 100 back.

Taking the top three spots in the 200 fly was sophomore David Ireland (Dayton, Ohio/Oakwood) with a time of 2:00.47, classmate Eric Shuman (Black Mountain N.C./Asheville Christian) with a time of 2:00.59 and senior Jeff Stirling (Skillman, N.J./Montgomery) with a time of 2:10.78.

The final sweep of the top spots came in the 50 free, as junior Rick Sykes (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley) finished in first place (21.68), sophomore Robert Knuth (Virginia Beach, Va./Cape Henry Collegiate) in second place (22.72) and senior Ian Dexter (Mountain Brook, Ala./Mountain Brook) in third place (23.06).

W&L took both relays on the day, with the team of Hesser, Ireland, Jeff Stirling and Sykes winning the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:37.16. In the 400 free relay, Brian Stirling, Harder, senior Ryan Hartman (Yorktown, Va./Grafton) and Sykes touched in first with a time of 3:16.18.

Individually, senior Chris Washnock (Greer, S.C./Greenville) led W&L with three event victories. He won the 100 breast with a time of 1:02.95, while also taking the 200 breast (2:20.17) and 200 IM (2:01.55).

Also claiming event victories for the Generals was first-year Alex Hampel (Middletown, Del./Salesianum) in the 1000 free (10:22.52), Brian Stirling in the 100 free (48.10), Flint in the 200 back (2:04.66), Shuman in the 500 free (5:02.03) and Jeff Stirling in the 100 fly (52.28).

W&L returns to the pool on Friday, traveling to Mary Washington for a 7:00 pm meet.
