W&L Men's Swimming Cruises to 150-102 Win over Gettysburg

LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee men's swimming team recorded a first-place finish in 12 events before swimming exhibition in the final two events of the meet as it defeated Gettysburg, 150-102, on Saturday afternoon at Cy Twombly Pool.

W&L (6-3) claimed the top spot in the first 12 events of the meet, including taking the top two spots in six events. The Generals had nine different swimmers claim first-place finishes, while first-year David Ireland (Dayton, Ohio/Oakwood) and junior Brian Stirling (Skillman, N.J./Montgomery) both finished the day with two top placings. Ireland swam to first-place finishes in the 200 fly (1:58.07) and 200 breast (2:16.13), while Brian Stirling was victorious in the 200 free (48.41) and 100 fly (52.16).

The Generals started the day by finishing one-two in the 200 medley relay. The squad of sophomore Wayde Marsh (Milford, Del./Salesianum School), junior Robert Grattan (Richmond, Va./Trinity Episcopal), Brian Stirling and sophomore Rick Sykes (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley) touched in with a time of 1:37.65, while members junior Chris Washnock (Greer, S.C./Greenville), Ireland, sophomore Tyler Gehrs (Alexandria, Va./St. Andrew's and first-year Robert Knuth (Virginia Beach, Va./Cape Henry) touched in second place in a time of 1:39.99.

W&L took the top three spots in the 1000 free, with junior Frank Cullo (Sewickley, Pa./Central Catholic) taking first (10:25.57), junior Ben Absher (Knoxville, Tenn./Christian Academy) finishing second (10:32.01) and first-year Forrest Behne (Loveland, Ohio/Loveland) touching in third place (10:36.99). The Blue and White also took the top two spots in the next two events, including Gehrs finishing first in the 200 free (1:47.75), followed by senior Brandon Wilder (Suffolk, Va./Nansemond-Suffolk Academy) (1:48.16) and Marsh and Washnock finishing first and second in the 100 back with times of 55.09 and 55.13, respectively.

Other event victories for W&L on the day included junior Robert Grattan (Richmond, Va./Trinity Episcopal) in the 100 breast (1:02.48), Sykes in the 50 free (21.94), Washnock in the 200 back (1:58.46) and Wilder in the 500 free (4:54.55). The Generals swam exhibition in the final two events of the day as they cruised to the victory.

 W&L returns to action next Saturday as it hosts Catholic and Marymount at 2:00 pm.
