LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee wrestling team recorded a 45-0 victory over Southern Virginia on Wednesday evening at Doremus Gymnasium.
The Generals picked up forfeit wins at 133 and 285 pounds and notched four victories by fall in defeating the Knights for the seventh-straight time.
Following a forfeit win at 133 pounds, first-year 141-pounder Eric Fessel (Rockville, Md./Georgetown Prep) got things started for W&L when he produced a pin of SVU's Travis Trahan in 5:46.
First-year HT Kotchinian (Lowell, Mass./Belmont Hill) notched a 3-2 win over Brandon Seeberger at 149 pounds and senior Keith Jaworski (Clarksville, Md./River Hill) defeated Jeremy Atkinson at 157 pounds by a score of 8-3.
The W&L lead swelled to 24-0 as junior Sam Campbell (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) notched a pin over Andrew Blakely (4:01) at 165 pounds and first-year Daniel Igel (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla./Bolles School) made it 27-0 with a thrilling 9-7 win over Gordon Gibson. Igel notched a reversal with less than 10 seconds remaining to break a 7-7 tie.
Junior David Dennis (Sherman, W.Va./Ravenswood) pinned Wesley Hyatt in 3:48 and first-year Jordan Yost (Fairfax, Va./Fairfax) pinned Taylor Savio in 2:04 to give W&L a 39-0 lead in the last contested match of the evening.
The win improved W&L to 1-0 overall, while Southern Virginia dropped to 1-2 with the loss.
Washington and Lee will now break for finals and the holiday break before returning to action on January 8 at the Washington & Jefferson Quad. The Generals will face the host Presidents, Gettysburg and Muskingum.
