WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Washington and Lee swimming teams
were in action on Saturday evening at a double-dual hosted by
Catholic University. The Generals' men's and
women's teams both recorded victories over the host Cardinals
and Marymount University.
The W&L men defeated Catholic, 166.5-63.5, and knocked off
Marymount, 166-79. The Generals' women beat Catholic, 155-94,
and defeated Marymount, 141-108.
Leading the way for the W&L men (8-3) were senior Ian
Childers (Ona, W.Va./Greater Latrobe) and sophomore Chris Washnock
(Greer, S.C./Greenville), who both won two individual events and
swam on a winning relay team.
Childers won the 100 breast (1:04.20) and 200 breast (2:19.26),
while also swimming second for the winning 200 medley relay squad
(1:41.24). Washnock was victorious in the 100 back (56.05) and 200
back (2:01.10) and swam the lead leg on the 200 medley relay. The
two were joined on the relay by senior Josh Gonzalez (Bridgewater,
N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) and senior Brandon Barnds (Mission Hills,
Kan./Shawnee). Gonzalez added a win in the 200 fly with a time of
2:00.71.
Senior Nick Talluri (Mount Airy, N.C./Mount Airy) posted wins in
the 50 free (22.12) and 100 free (48.87) events, while senior
Jonathan Giesen (Hoover, Ala./Paul Laurence Dunbar) notched a win
in the 100 fly (55.42) and swam the anchor leg on the winning 400
free relay team that finished in 3:26.96. He was joined by
sophomore Jeff Stirling (Skillman, N.J./Montgomery), senior Kevin
Corn (Lawrenceville, Ga./Peachtree Ridge) and sophomore Ryan
Hartman (Yorktown, Va./Grafton).
The W&L women (6-4) were paced by senior Sarah Simpson
(Charlotte, N.C./South Mecklenburg), who won two individual events
and was on a winning relay team. Simpson touched first in the 100
free (56.42) and 200 free (2:03.13) and swam the anchor leg on the
200 medley relay team that won in a time of 1:56.97. Junior Tess
Hayden (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier) led off the relay, followed by
senior Lynn Bazzel (Atlanta, Ga./Lovett), first-year Delaney Rolfe
(Dallas, Texas/Highland Park) and Simpson.
Rolfe also posted a win in the 500 free (5:30.71), while
first-year Brittany Ross (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) won the 200 fly
(2:18.18) and first-year Ann McCampbell (Oklahoma City,
Okla./Casady School) won the 1650 free with a time of 18:55.71.
Both W&L squads will be in action again on Saturday as they
host Johns Hopkins for an 11:00 dual meet.
