CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The Washington and Lee men's swimming
team, on the strength of three runner-up finishes in the relay
events, defeated Catawba and Rollins while falling to Wingate on
Saturday afternoon in a two-day dual meet at the Mecklenburg County
Aquatic Center.
The Generals defeated Catawba, 248-65, felled Rollins 238-77 and
lost to Wingate, 220-95. With the pair of victories, W&L now
stands at 4-2 on the season.
W&L had three relay teams record runner-up finishes in three
different races to lead the way. The 200 free relay team of seniors
Nick Talluri (Mount Airy, N.C./Mount Airy), Brandon Barnds (Mission
Hills, Kan./Shawnee), sophomore Ian Dexter (Mountain Brook,
Ala./Mountain Brook) and first-year Rick Sykes (Wellesley,
Mass./Wellesley) grabbed second place in a time of 1:27.53.
Talluri was joined by senior Ian Childers (Ona, W. Va./Greater
Latrobe) and sophomores Chris Washnock (Greer, S.C./Greenville) and
Jeff Stirling (Skillman, N.J./Montgomery) in capturing second place
in the 400 medley relay with a mark of 3:39.10.
The Generals' final runner-up relay was the 200 medley relay
team of Barnds, senior Winston Stagg (Midlothian,
Va./Governor's School), sophomore Brian Stirling (Skillman,
N.J./Montgomery) and first-year Wayde Marsh (Milford,
Del./Salesianum School), which recorded a time of 1:39.66.
Among the individual highlights, was the Generals' 1-2-3-4
finish in the 200 fly. Junior Brandon Wilder (Suffolk,
Va./Nansemond-Suffolk) led the charge with a time of 2:00.21 and
was followed by senior Josh Gonzalez (Bridgewater,
N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) with a time of 2:00.69, sophomore Ryan
Hartman (Yorktown, Va./Grafton) in 2:02.02 and Stagg with a mark of
2:02.41.
Washnock added a second-place finish in the 100 back (54.99),
Childers took second in the 200 breast (2:16.19) and Brian Stirling
and Jeff Stirling went second-third in the 100 fly with times of
53.32 and 53.33, respectively.
The Generals return to the pool on Nov. 21 when they take on
Carnegie Mellon and Rochester in Pittsburgh, Pa. Meet time is set
for 11:00 am.
