PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Washington and Lee men's and
women's swimming teams were both in action on Saturday for a
double-dual against Carnegie Mellon and the University of Rochester
in Pittsburgh, Pa. The W&L men defeated Rochester, 203-59, but
fell to Carnegie Mellon, 153-107. The W&L women also defeated U
of R (145-117), but were defeated by CMU (165-92).
The men (5-3) were led by sophomore Chris Washnock (Greer,
S.C./Greenville), who won the 100 back (53.62) and the 200 back
(1:55.51) events. Senior Nick Talluri (Mount Airy, N.C./Mount Airy)
posted a win in the 100 free (48.39) and swam a leg on the winning
400 free relay team that finished in 3:15.74. He was joined on the
team by first-year Wayde Marsh (Milford, Del./Salesianum School),
first-year Tyler Gehrs (Alexandria, Va./St. Andrew's) and
senior Brandon Barnds (Mission Hills, Kan./Shawnee).
First-year Rick Sykes (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley) touched first
in the 50 free (21.78) as the Generals swept the top three placings
in the event. Brands was second (21.82), while Talluri was third
(22.22).
The women (4-3) were led by sophomore Dana Fredericks (Yorktown,
Va./York), who led a W&L sweep of the first four placings in
the 200 IM. Fredericks won the event with a time of 2:16.29, while
sophomore Katie Salvati (Roselle Park, N.J./Mount Saint Mary
Academy) finished second overall (2:19.71). Senior Jenna Worsham
(Cumming, Ga./Wesleyan School) finished third (2:19.98) and
sophomore Brielle Weinstein (Summerville, S.C./Pinewood Prep)
finished fourth (2:21.43).
Salvati also finished second in the 200 back (2:14.54), while the
400 free relay team of first-years Megan Bock (Holmdel,
N.J./Holmdel) and Izzy Brassfield (Greensboro, N.C./Greensboro
Day), senior Sarah Simpson (Charlotte, N.C./South Mecklenberg) and
sophomore Elizabeth Starnes (Harrison, Tenn./Girls Prep) finished
first with a time of 3:47.24.
Both the W&L men and women will return to action on Dec. 3-5
at the University of Virginia Invitational.
