W&L Swimming Splits Meet with Centre

LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee men's and women's swimming teams split with visiting Centre on Saturday afternoon. The W&L men came away 134-109 winners, while the women fell 142-120.

The women (0-2) were paced by four individual first-place finishers and one winning relay. First-year Brittany Ross (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) led the way, winning the 200 fly with a time of 2:18.19. She also touched second in the 200 IM with a time of 2:22.67. Sophomore Elizabeth Starnes also placed at the top in two events, winning the 500 free (5:40.43) and finishing second in the 1000 free (11:26.03). Sophomore Katie Salvati (Roselle Park, N.J./Mount Saint Mary Academy) touched in first in the 200 back with a time of 2:17.48, while senior Jenna Worsham (Cumming, Ga./Wesleyan School) took the 200 IM with a time of 2:20.10. Worsham also anchored the winning 200 free relay squad that finished with a time of 1:43.67. She was joined by senior Sarah Simpson (Charlotte, N.C./South Mecklenburg), sophomore Dana Fredericks (Yorktown, Va./York) and first-year Izzy Brassfield (Greensboro, N.C./Greensboro Day) on the relay.

On the men's (1-1) side, the Generals had eight first-place finishers and one winning relay. Seniors Ian Childers (Ona, W.Va./Greater Latrobe) and Nick Talluri (Mount Airy, N.C./Mount Airy) and sophomore Chris Washnock (Greer, S.C./Greenville) paced W&L as each claimed two individual events. Childers touched first in both the 100 breast (1:04.32) and 200 breast (2:21.56), while Talluri claimed the 50 free with a time of 22.08 and the 100 free with a time of 49.01. Washnock placed first in both the 100 back (56.04) and 200 back (2:00.44).

The Generals also received first-place finishes from sophomore Ben Absher (Knoxville, Tenn./Christian Academy) in the 1000 free (10:41.04), senior Winston Stagg (Midlothian, Va./Governor's School) in the 200 fly (2:02.83) and junior Brandon Wilder (Suffolk, Va./Nansemond-Suffolk Academy) in the 200 free (1:51.68). The relay team of first-year Wayde Marsh (Milford, Del./Salesianum School), sophomore Brian Stirling (Skillman, N.J./Montgomery), Stagg and Talluri took the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:40.48.

The women's team returns to action Oct. 24 as they host the ODAC Relay Meet, while the men will next take to the pool Oct. 31 when they host Transylvania.
