FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- The Washington and Lee men's and
women's swimming teams both fell to Mary Washington to open
the 2009-10 season. The W&L men were defeated by a score of
146-116 and the women suffered a 180-82 setback.
The Generals (0-1 men, 0-1 women) claimed six event victories
(five individual, one relay) to highlight the meet. On the
men's side, five different swimmers recorded individual
victories for the Generals. Seniors Nick Talluri (Mount Airy,
N.C./Mount Airy) and Winston Stagg (Midlothia, Va./Governor's
School) each claimed victories in their events. Talluri took the
100 free with a time of 48.70, while Stagg touched first in the 200
breast with a time of 2:19.69. Sophomores Chris Washnock (Greer,
S.C./Greenville) and Jeff Stirling (Skillman, N.J./Montgomery) also
claimed victories, with Washnock taking the 200 back (1:57.09) and
Jeff Stirling claiming the 100 fly (53.29). First-year Rick Sykes
(Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley) rounded out the Generals'
victories, touching first in the 50 free with a time of 22.14.
For the women, the 400 free relay team of seniors Sarah Simpson
(Charlotte, N.C./South Mecklenburg) and Jenna Worsham (Cumming,
Ga./Wesleyan School), sophomore Elizabeth Starnes (Harrison,
Tenn./Girls Prep) and first-year Izzy Brassfield (Greensboro,
N.C./Greensboro Day School) touched in first with a time of
3:34.76. The Generals also added a pair of second-place finishes
with first-year Brittany Ross (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) in the 200
fly (2:14.35) and Brassfield in the 50 free (25.89).
Both the men's and women's teams return to action
tomorrow as they host Centre at the Cy Twombly Pool with a start
time of 11:00 am.
