W&L Swimming Teams Knock Off Gettysburg

LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee swimming teams were both in action on Saturday as the Generals hosted Gettysburg College for a dual meet. The W&L men won, 159-100, while the women were victorious for the first-time ever against the Bullets, 135-127.

The women were again led by the exploits of senior Lindsey Strachan (Midlothian, Va./Governor's School), who won two individual events and swam on a winning relay team. Strachan won the 200 back with a time of 2:09.53 that broke a 26-year old pool record. She also won the 100 back (1:01.53) and led off the winning 200 medley relay squad that finished in 1:53.78. She was joined on the team by junior Lynn Bazzel (Atlanta, Ga./Lovett), senior Julianne Miata (Valhalla, N.Y./Westlake) and junior Sarah Simpson (Charlotte, N.C./South Mecklenburg).

Other first-place finishers for the Generals included Bazzel, Miata and first-year Dana Fredericks (Yorktown, Va./York). Bazzel touched first in the 100 breast (1:09.75), Miata won the 50 free (25.83) and Fredericks finished first in the 200 breast (2:30.62).

For the men, senior Paul Crook (Nashville, Tenn./Montgomery Bell) led the way with a pair of first-place individual showings and a pair of first-place finishes on relay teams. He won the 100 free (48.18) and 200 IM (2:01.98) and also swam on the winning 200 medley (1:40.31) and 200 free (1:31.92) relay teams. He was joined on both relay squads by seniors Brett Tatman (Marietta, Ga./Walton), Chris Diebold (Platte City, Mo./Landsdale Catholic) senior Matt Anderson (Richmond, Va. / St. Christopher's).

Additionally, juniors Nick Talluri (Mount Airy, N.C. / Mount Airy), Winston Stagg (Midlothian, Va. / Governor's School), Ian Childers (Ona, W. Va. / Greater Latrobe) and Dan Austin (Terrace Park, Ohio / Mariemont), sophomore Dorsey Terry (Gibbstown, N.J. / Salesianum) and first-years Ben Absher (Knoxville, Tenn./Christian Academy) and Brian Stirling (Skillman, N.J. / Montgomery) all won a event for the Generals. Talluri placed first in the 200 free (1:48.47), Stagg touched first in the 200 fly (2:01.62), Childers won the 200 breast (2:16.53), Austin finished first in the 500 free (5:01.42), Terry won the 100 fly (55.39), Absher placed first in the 1000 free (10:28.32) and Stirling touched first in the 50 free (22.29).

Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday as it travels to Marymount for a 2:00 pm dual meet.
