LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee wrestling team opened its dual match slate with a win as it defeated Southern Virginia, 45-9, on Wednesday evening at Doremus Gym.
The Generals picked up forfeit wins in five weight classes and won three of the five contested matches. At 149 pounds, first-year David Dennis (Sherman, W.Va./Ravenswood) pinned Southern Virginia first-year Jake Shearer in 1:02, while at 165 pounds, senior Rob Terrin (Baltimore, Md./Friends) pinned SVU first-year Dallin Rust (Ridgeley, W.Va./Frankfort) in 4:38. At 285 pounds, senior John Christopher (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Cardinal Gibbons) knocked off SVU senior Pete Hansen (Bountiful, Utah/Viewmont), 7-5.
Winners for Southern Virginia were first-year Spencer Hirt (Barrow, Alaska/Barrow) and sophomore Peter Rose (Heber City, Utah/Wasatch). Hirt defeated W&L sophomore Sammy Brusca (Rockville, Md./Georgetown Prep) by a score of 2-1 at 141 pounds, while Rose pinned W&L sophomore Keith Jaworski (Clarksville, Md./River Hill) in 4:14 at 157 pounds.
Washington and Lee will now break for finals and the holidays before returning to the mats on January 10 at Waynesburg College, where it will face Waynesburg, Washington & Jefferson and Gettysburg beginning at 11:00 am.
