LANCASTER, Pa. -- The Washington and Lee swimming teams were in action on Saturday afternoon at the Franklin & Marshall Quad Dual meet. The W&L men finished 3-0 with wins over Carnegie Mellon (156.5-105.5), Franklin & Marshall (201-61) and Rochester (199-63). The W&L women went 2-1 on the day, defeating F&M (173-89) and Rochester (182-80) and falling to CMU (137-125).
The W&L men (7-0) were led by senior Paul Crook (Nashville, Tenn./Montgomery Bell), who won three individual events and was part of one winning relay team. Crook won the 200 free (1:43.60), the 500 free (4:42.72) and the 200 IM (1:59.31). He also swam on the winning 200 medley relay team that finished in 1:38.56.
Junior Brandon Barnds (Mission Hills, Kan./Shawnee) recorded one individual first-place finish and was a member of two winning relay teams. Barnds touched first in the 50 free in a time of 21.89 and was also victorious in the 200 medley and 400 free relay (3:14.09) teams.
Junior Nick Talluri (Mount Airy, N.C./Mount Airy) won the 100 free (48.44) and swam a leg on the winning 400 free relay, while junior Josh Gonzalez (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) finished first in the 200 butterfly (1:58.58).
First-years Jeff Stirling (Skillman, N.J./Montgomery) and Chris Washnock (Greer, S.C./Greenville) also notched first-place finishes. Stirling touched first in the 100 butterfly (52.74), while Washnock won the 200 back in a time of 1:56.19.
The W&L women (5-4) were paced by first-year Elizabeth Starnes (Harrison, Tenn./Girls Prep), who recorded a first-place finish in the 200 free (1:59.62) and also swam a leg on the 400 free relay team (3:44.89) that finished second.
First-year Dana Fredericks (Yorktown, Va./York) won the 200 breast (2:31.47) and finished second in the 200 IM (2:18.46), while senior Jule Miata (Valhalla, N.Y./Westlake) touched first in the 100 fly in a time of 1:01.95.
Junior Sarah Simpson (Charlotte, N.C./South Mecklenburg) placed second in the 100 free (55.98) and swam a leg on the 400 free relay team, while senior Lindsay Strachan (Midlothian, Va./Governor's School) and junior Lynn Bazzel (Atlanta, Ga./Lovett) wrapped up the Generals' leaders with second-place finishes. Strachan placed second in the 200 back (2:09.28), while Bazzel notched a second-place mark in the 100 breast (1:09.01).
The W&L swimming teams return to the pool on Dec. 13, 14 and 15 at the Cal-Lutheran Invitational.
