Swimming at Carnegie Mellon Quad

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Washington and Lee swimming teams were in action on Saturday afternoon at the Carnegie Mellon Quad Dual meet. The W&L men finished 3-0 with wins over CMU (140-122), Franklin & Marshall (184-78) and Rochester (189-73). The W&L women went 2-1 on the day, defeating F&M (135-127) and Rochester (159.5-102.5) and falling to CMU (137-95).

The W&L men (7-0) were led by senior Tim McGlaston (Attleboro, Mass./Attleboro), who won two individual events and was part of two winning relay teams. McGlaston won the 50 free in an NCAA "B" cut time of 21.20 and finished first in the 100 free with a time of 47.57. He also swam on the winning 200 medley relay (1:37.81) and 400 free relay (3:12.67) teams.

Sophomore Josh Gonzalez (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) touched first in the 100 (53.54) and 200 fly (1:59.18) and swam a leg on the winning 200 medley relay team, while junior Paul Crook (Nashville, Tenn./Montgomery Bell) won the 500 free (4:46.25) and the 200 IM (1:57.87) and also swam on the winning 200 medley relay.

Senior Alex Sweet (Louisville, Ky./Kentucky Country Day) emerged victorious in the 200 free with a time of 1:45.76 and swam a leg on the winning 400 free relay team.

The W&L women (6-4) were paced by freshman Tess Hayden (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier), who won the 1000 free (10:59.58), finished second in the 500 free (5:23.84) and swam a leg on the second-place 400 free relay team (3:46.31).

Freshman Jaclyn Smith (Southampton, Pa./Archbishop Wood) won the 200 free with a time of 2:00.81 and also swam a leg on the 400 free relay team, while junior Lindsey Strachan (Midlothian, Va./Governor's School) finished second in the 200 back (2:13.87) and third in the 100 back (1:01.87). Junior Susan Mahoney (Richmond, Va./St. Catherines) wrapped up the Generals' leaders by finishing second in the 200 IM (2:17.50) and third in the 200 breast (2:35.58).

The W&L men and women both return to action on November 29 as they participate in the NIKE Kenyon Cup Invite in Gambier, Ohio.
