LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee men's and women's swim teams hosted their first meet of the 2006-07 season on Saturday afternoon at Cy Twombly Pool against Mary Washington. The men downed UMW, 172-69, while the women were defeated by the Eagles, 171-90.
The W&L men were paced by junior Tim McGlaston (Attleboro, Mass./Attleboro), who set a pool- and school-record in the 50 free with an NCAA "A" cut time of 20.66 in the prelims of the event. McGlaston then teamed up with seniors Mike Ginder (Jacksonville, Fla./Episcopal) and Dave Croushore (Glen Allen, Va./North Penn), and junior Alex Sweet (Louisville, Ky./Kentucky Country Day) to win the 200 free relay in an NCAA "B" cut time of 1:24.02. The team of McGlaston, Ginder and seniors Kevin Hayes (Mercer Island, Wash./Mercer Island) and Ben Accinelli (Dubuque, Iowa/Hempstead) won the 200 medley relay in a time of 1:37.12.
Croushore also tabbed two individual first-place finishes in the 50 free (21.60) and the 100 free (48.58), while Ginder placed first in the 200 free (1:42.35).
On the women's side, the Generals were led by sophomore Lindsey Strachan (Midlothian, Va./Maggie Walker Governor's School) and freshman Jenna Worsham (Cumming, Ga./Wesleyan School), who combined for three first-place finishes. Strachan notched wins in the 100 back (1:01.96) and the 200 back (2:13.58), while Worsham placed first in the 200 free (2:03.51).
The W&L women's swim team returns to action on Sunday when they take on Sweet Briar and Emory & Henry at 2:00 pm in Amherst, Va. The W&L men's swim team will resume its 2006-07 campaign on Sunday, Nov. 12, against Gettysburg at 1:00 pm in Lexington, Va.
