DANVILLE, Ky. -- The Washington and Lee men's and women's swim teams continued their season-opening weekend with a meet against Centre on Sunday morning. The men won by a score of 117-81, while the women were defeated by a score of 87-118.
The W&L men set pool-records in five events and were paced by seniors Mike Ginder (Jacksonville, Fla./Episcopal) and Kevin Hayes (Mercer Island, Wash./Mercer Island), and junior Tim McGlaston (Attleboro, Mass./Attleboro).
Ginder placed first in the 200 free with a pool-record time of 1:43.32 and competed on the winning and pool-record setting 400 medley (3:36.81) and 400 free (3:12.08) relay teams. Hayes also was a member of the winning 400 medley relay team and won the 200 IM in a pool-record time of 2:01.44. McGlaston took first in both the 50 free with a pool-record time of 21.75 and the 100 free (48.81). He also swam on the winning 400 free relay team.
Sophomore Chris Diebold (Platte City, Mo./Lansdale Catholic) took first in the 500 free (4:58.40), while freshman Dan Austin (Terrace Park, Ohio/Mariemont) won the 1000 free (10:26.05).
Sophomore Lindsey Strachan (Midlothian, Va./Maggie Walker Governor's School) and freshman Sarah Simpson (Charlotte, N.C./South Mecklenburg) led the Washington and Lee women. Strachan notched a first-place finish in the 100 back (1:03.33) and a second-place finish in the 200 free (2:04.97), while Simpson won the 1000 free (11:38.39) and took second in the 500 free (5:28.88).
In addition, freshman Jenna Worsham (Cumming, Ga./Wesleyan School) took second place in the 200 IM (2:20.39). Both Worsham and Strachan competed on the second-place finishing 400 medley relay team (4:17.55), while Simpson swam with the 400 free relay team that placed second with a time of 3:49.95.
Both squads return to action on Saturday when they host Mary Washington at 2:00 pm.
