LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee men's and women's swimming teams opened up their home schedule against Catholic on Saturday afternoon at Twombley Pool. The men won 202-59, while the women lost 124-138.
In the men's meet, the quartet of freshmen Will Hartmann (Williamsburg, Va./Walsingham Academy) and Stuart Frankfort (Lynchburg, VA./E.C. Glass), senior Chris Colby (Ossining, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac), and sophomore Michael Ginder (Jacksonville, Fla./Episcopal) captured the 200-yard medley relay in a pool-record time of 1:38.23.
Ginder, Colby, and sophomore Kevin Hayes (Mercer Island, Wash./Mercer Island) were all double-winners in individual events. Ginder won both the 100-yard backstroke (54.16) and 500-yard freestyle (4:56.23), Colby captured the 100 and 200-yard butterfly in 54.45 and 2:03.29, respectively, while Hayes placed first in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:22.68) and 400-yard IM (4:32.61).
In the women's meet, the foursome of freshman Jess Cobb (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown), sophomore Abbie Sauter (Darien, Conn./Darien), freshman Amy Roberson (Nacogdoches, Texas/Nacogdoches), and junior Kristine Holda (Strongville, Ohio/Strongsville) won the 200-yard medley relay in a time of 1:55.37. Senior Suzie LaFleur (Natick, Mass./Monroe) teamed up with Roberson, Sauter, and Holda to help the Generals win the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:45.49.
Cobb was also a double-winner in the 100 and 200-yard backstroke in times of 1:02.43 and 2:19.53, respectively.
The W&L swimming teams return to the pool on Fri., Nov. 5 when they host Randolph-Macon. The meet begins at 7:00 pm.
