W&L Swimming Knocks Off Catholic

LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee men's and women's swimming teams were both victorious against Catholic University squads on Saturday afternoon at the Cy Twombly Pool. The men were 145-50 winners, while the women prevailed by a 135-70 count.

Three different members of the Generals' men's squad (4-3) won two events. Freshman Clark Barrineau (Charlotte, N.C./South Mecklenburg) picked up wins in the 1000 Free (10:48.22) and 500 Free (5:12.90), senior Zach Fake (Upper Saddle River, N.J./Northern Highlands) won the 50-yard freestyle (22.25) and the 100-yard freestyle (50.17) and junior Eric Ritter (Birmingham, Ala./Mountain Brook) won the 200 IM and 200 Back with times of 2:10.19 and 2:09.63, respectively.

The W&L women were led by three-event winner, senior Blair Huffman (Roanoke, Va./North Cross) and two-time winner, freshman Kristine Holda (Strongsville, Ohio/Strongsville). Huffman won the 1000 Free (11:31.26), 200 IM (2:19.10) and 200 Fly (2:18.00), while Holda touched first in the 50-yard freestyle (25.92) and 100-yard freestyle (55.74).

Sophomore Jim Horstmann (Havertown, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) was the top performer for the CUA men (4-2), winning the 200 Breast with a time of 2:21.93 and finishing third in the 50 Free, touching in 23.09.

The Cardinals' women's team was paced by senior Kelly Anne Creazzo (Wilmington, Del./Ursulline Academy), who finished first in the 500 Free (5:35.22) and second in the 200 IM (2:22.75) and 200 Fly (2:21.12).

W&L's men's and women's teams will both return to action next Saturday when they host Sewanee. The meet is scheduled to start at 11:00 am.
