Generals Topple Southern Virginia, 26-15

LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee wrestling team won 6-of-10 matches and defeated Southern Virginia, 26-15, on Wednesday evening in Lexington, Va.

The Generals (4-5-1) started the meet with consecutive pins by senior heavyweight John Sensing (Hockessin, Del./The Tatnall School) and junior 125-pounder Ben Segal (Richmond, Va./Mills Godwin) to take a 12-0 lead.

The Knights cut the lead to 12-9 after sophomore133-pounder John Polena (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) was pinned by Jesse Mortensen and Gary Mortensen defeated freshman 141-pounder Cory Little (Charlotte, N.C./Independence), 13-8.

Senior 149-pounder Josh Chamberlain (Richmond, Va./Mills Godwin) defeated John McHenove, 18-3, and freshman Steve Saks (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North) defeated Arron Jaynes, 4-2, at 157.

So. Virginia fought with victories by Hadyn Call over W&L's 165-pound senior Greg Valentine (Pittsburgh, Pa./Woodland Hills), 6-1, and Chrs Burton, who defeated junior Ivan Zdanov (Frederick, Md./Frederick), 10-5.

W&L clinched the win with victories by senior 184-pounder John Valentine (Pittsburgh, Pa./Woodland Hills) and junior Ezra Morse (Central Point, Ore./Crater) at 197. Morse now stands at 15-1 on the season.

Washington and Lee will travel to Newport News, Va., on Saturday to compete in the Newport News Apprentice Invitational. The invite is set to begin at 8:00 am.
