W&L Swimming Splits With Mary Washington

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- The Washington and Lee men's and women's swimming teams split a dual meet on Saturday afternoon at Mary Washington College in Fredericskburg, Va. The W&L men improved to 8-2 with a 110.5-94.5 victory over Mary Washington, while the women's squad fell to the Eagles, 105-75.

The men's team set three meet records in the victory, which was led by a pair of seniors in Colin Hayes (Mercer Island, Wash./Mercer Island) and Mike Miraglia (Rockville, Md./Rockville). Hayes set a meet-record when he tied for first place in the 100-yard Butterfly in a time of 52.37. Miraglia also set a meet record with his win in the 100-yard Breastroke (1:01.93). Freshman Colin Mitchell (Alberta, Canada/Springbank) placed first in the 100-yard Backstroke, posting a meet-record time of 55.94.

The Washington and Lee women (5-7) were paced by sophomore Kelli Austin (Niles, Mich./Niles), who placed first in the 100-yard Freestyle (56.26). Sophomore Blair Huffman (Roanoke, Va./North Cross) also took home first place in the 500-yard Freestyle in a time of 5:37.70.

The W&L men will return to action on Thursday, Feb. 15, as they travel to Grove City, Pa., for the annual Grove City Invitational. The women's squad will travel to Radford, Va., on Thursday, Feb. 1, to take on Radford and Hollins.
