About the Facility

Facility Hours

The Richard L. Duchossois Athletic and Recreation Center opened in the fall of 2020 after two years of construction at a total cost of nearly 48 million dollars.

The 161,000 square foot facility houses the Washington and Lee Department of Athletics and Physical Education and provides opportunities for athletic competition, fitness and recreational activities and physical education instruction.

The centerpiece of the facility is the 16,000 square foot Holekamp Gym, which serves as the home of the W&L men’s and women’s basketball, volleyball and wrestling programs.  The gym features seating for 1,064 spectators and includes a state-of-the-art sound system, improved lighting and new scoreboards that display real-time player statistics for the fans to enjoy.  The facility also features updated climate control, including air conditioning.

In addition to the Holekamp Gym, the Richard L. Duchossois Athletic and Recreation Center also includes the Class of 1969 Doremus Gymnasium, which originally opened as the University’s primary gymnasium in 1916.  Additional opportunities are also available in a 7,000 square foot rec gym located on the first floor.  It features a sport court and reinforced walls for myriad activities.

Another dominant feature of the Richard L. Duchossois Athletic and Recreation Center is a renovated and reconfigured fitness center that encompasses nearly 9,000 square feet of floor space for free weights, strength and cardio equipment.  Students and campus community members can also take advantage of four multi-purpose rooms spread throughout the building, which can be utilized for a variety of group exercise, dance and spinning classes.

The third floor of the building houses the Department of Athletics main administrative offices and a new athletic training room.  The ATC facility nearly doubled in size and includes office space for the staff, an examination room, a hydrotherapy room and a wall-mounted move strong unit with cantilevered stations for rehabilitation workouts.

The third floor also includes personalized locker rooms and shared lounge spaces for the men’s and women’s basketball, volleyball and wrestling teams.

The fifth floor includes the wrestling room, which at 4,074 square feet, is three times the size of the former wrestling facility.  The room includes custom branded padded walls, NCAA Championship competition mats and a number of banners honoring the program’s high achievers.

The men’s and women’s golf programs benefit from their very own locker areas which feature areas for putting and ball-striking on both the first and second floors.  These areas allow the Generals to work on their game no matter the weather conditions.  Also featured on the first floor of the facility are four squash courts and three racquetball courts, while the second floor contains locker rooms for university faculty and staff, along with officials and opponent locker rooms.

In addition to housing Holekamp Gym, the fourth floor boasts a large conference room and a state-of-the art classroom for physical education classes and department meetings.  The fourth floor corridors feature trophy cases and custom graphics that tell the story of Washington and Lee’s tradition of success in over 100 years of intercollegiate athletic competition.  The showpiece is the Athletics Hall of Fame room, which honors the Generals’ best teams and individual athletes from over the years.
