LEXINGTON, Ky. — The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) released on Monday the honorees for the AVCA Team Academic Award for the 2018-19 season, and Washington and Lee was one of 175 Division III institutions to garner the accolade.
This marks the sixth straight year W&L has received the award and the 10th time in the last 14 years. The Generals finished the 2018 campaign 21-13 overall, and claimed the 16th ODAC Championship in program history. The Blue and White fell in the first round of the NCAA Tournament to then fourth-ranked Colorado College, 3-2.
W&L was one of 1,125 teams to earn the AVCA Team Academic award, breaking the organization's previous record of 977 honorees last year.
The award, which was initiated in the 1992-93 academic year, honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that displayed excellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average on a 4.0 scale or a 4.10 cumulative team GPA on a 5.0 scale.
The Generals open the 2019 season on Friday, August 30 against Hanover (12:00 pm) and Huntingdon (5:00 pm) at the Maryville College Bicentennial Invitational.
