FERRUM, Va. — The Washington and Lee volleyball team had three players with at least nine kills en route to a 3-0 neutral-site win against Bridgewater on Saturday at Ferrum.
The Generals (7-8, 4-1 ODAC) held a 21-20 lead late in the first set and then back-to-back kills by junior outside hitter Allison Webb (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Westlake) pushed the advantage to 23-20. A kill by sophomore middle blocker Courtney Berry (Charlottesville, Va./Western Albemarle) gave W&L an opportunity for set point (24-20), but an attack error and bad set by the Blue and White trimmed the lead to 24-22.
Berry then put the set away with another kill to give the Generals a 25-22 win in the stanza. W&L scored 10 of the first 12 points of the second set on its way to an easy 25-16 victory, and then the Blue and White closed out the match in the third, 25-19, by scoring six of the final eight points of the set.
Berry had a match-high 12 kills with only two errors on 18 attempts for a .556 hitting percentage. Senior outside hitter Meg Guignon (St. Louis, Mo./Visitation Academy) tallied 10 kills, seven digs and five assists. Webb contributed nine kills on a .316 hitting percentage.
Junior setter Anna Soroka (Mechanicsville, Va./Lee-Davis) totaled 34 assists, six digs and four kills. Senior outside hitter Elly Cosgrove (Wilmington, N.C./John T. Hoggard) led the back row with a match-high 14 digs.
The Blue and White totaled 46 kills in the match compared to just 22 for the Eagles (13-3, 3-1 ODAC). Junior outside hitter Rachel Gaston and first-year middle hitter Nadia Valle paced Bridgewater with six kills, but Gaston also had seven attack errors. Senior setter Victoria Wilson had 19 assists and four digs.
The Generals next play at Roanoke on Monday at 7:00 pm.
