ST. DAVID'S, Pa. — Eastern overcame a 22-17 deficit in the third to win the set, 32-30, on its way to winning the match, 3-1, over the Washington and Lee volleyball team on Saturday.
A kill by first-year outside hitter Val Sokolow (Draper, Utah/Juan Diego Catholic) gave the Generals (5-6) a 22-17 lead in the third with the match tied, 1-1. The Eagles (11-3) won back-to-back points to pull to within 22-19, but a kill by sophomore middle blocker Courtney Berry (Charlottesville, Va./Western Albemarle) left the Blue and White two points away from victory in the set.
A kill by sophomore outside hitter Caroline Shelby ignited a five-point run for Eastern, and then a kill by Sokolow tied the set at 24-24. Over the next 12 points, the Generals had five set-point opportunities, but the Eagles staved off each one. With the score then tied at 30-30, an attack error by W&L and an ace by junior defensive specialist Cecilia Bauer gave Eastern a 32-30 win in the stanza.
The Eagles carried the momentum over to the fourth and closed out the match, 25-17. W&L won the first set of the match, 25-17, but Eastern evened the contest by claiming the second, 25-17.
Sokolow led the Blue and White with 13 kills. Senior outside hitter Meg Guignon (St. Louis, Mo./Visitation Academy) totaled 12 kills and 14 digs. Junior outside hitter Ashleigh Meade (Bristow, Va./Patriot) notched 10 kills.
Senior outside hitter Elly Cosgrove (Wilmington, N.C./John T. Hoggard) tied a career-high with 25 digs, and sophomore outside hitter Kiera Borthwick (Northville, Mich./Northville) registered five kills, 16 digs, four blocks and two assists.
Senior middle hitter Sarah Roberts led the Eagles with a match-high 16 kills on a .333 hitting percentage, while Shelby contributed 15 kills and 10 digs.
The Generals played 14th-ranked Johns Hopkins later on Saturday at Eastern.
