GREENSBORO, N.C. — The Washington and Lee volleyball team held Guilford to a .061 hitting percentage en route to a 3-0 victory in ODAC action on Friday at Ragan-Brown Field House.
The key to the win for the Generals (9-1, 2-0 ODAC) came in the second set. W&L won the opening set, 25-22, and then after scoring seven of the first nine points in the second stanza, the Quakers (6-3, 1-1 ODAC) tied the score, 14-14, following a 12-7 spurt. The teams traded points and were eventually tied, 24-24. After an attack error by the Blue and White, Guilford had an opportunity to serve for set point.
W&L evened the set, 25-25, on a kill by junior outside hitter Meg Guignon (St. Louis, Mo./Visitation Academy). A kill by junior outside hitter Elly Cosgrove (Wilmington, N.C./John T. Hoggard) pushed the W&L lead to 27-26, but then an attack error by the Blue and White put the score at 27-27.
The Generals finally closed out the set, 29-27, with back-to-back kills by first-year outside hitter Brynne Gould (Boone, N.C./Watauga) and first-year middle blocker Courtney Berry (Charlottesville, Va./Western Albemarle). W&L finished off the match by winning the third, 25-18.
