W&L Volleyball Stifles Eastern Mennonite, 3-0

LEXINGTON, Va. — The Washington and Lee volleyball team registered a .325 hitting percentage in a 3-0 sweep of Eastern Mennonite on Tuesday. It marked the ODAC opener for both squads.

The Generals (8-1, 1-0 ODAC) scored the first four points of the opening set, including two aces by senior setter Elena West (Roanoke, Va./Northside). The Royals (2-8, 0-1 ODAC) then scored their first point of the match on a kill, but W&L responded with three straight points to grab a 7-1 lead. EMU would only get to within three the rest of the set, as the Blue and White took the first, 25-16.

The second remained competitive through the first 35 points, with W&L holding just a 19-16 advantage. The Generals then tallied six straight points, including two kills by first-year middle blocker Courtney Berry (Charlottesville, Va./Western Albemarle), to close out the stanza, 25-16.

Using the momentum from the second, the Blue and White scored eight of the first nine points to claim an 8-1 lead in the third. With the score at 12-5, sophomore outside hitter Ashleigh Meade (Bristow, Va./Patriot) served five straight points to stretch the margin to 17-5. The Generals eventually closed out the match, 25-11.

W&L totaled 37 kills on 80 attempts with just 11 errors to reach its hitting percentage. EMU had 19 kills and 19 errors in 89 attempts for a .000 hitting percentage.

Junior outside hitter Meg Guignon (St. Louis, Mo./Visitation Academy) and sophomore outside hitter Brynne Gould (Boone, N.C./Watauga) led the offensive attack. Guignon totaled 12 kills and nine digs, while hitting .478. Gould hit .471 with nine kills and three digs.

Senior defensive specialist Katie Volk (Lancaster, Calif./Quartz Hill) notched a match-high 18 digs to go with five assists. West had 11 assists, three aces and six digs. With her 11 assists, West moved to fourth on the W&L all-time list with 1,967. She passed Cheryl Taurassi '96 who finished her career with 1,964.

Senior outside hitter Janna Williams led the Royals with six kills, and senior setter Jasmine Johnson chipped in eight assists and seven digs.

The Generals next compete on Friday when they play at Guilford at 7:00 pm.
