FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) released its 2019 College Division All-State Men's Tennis Team on Tuesday and Washington and Lee claimed two selections each in both singles and doubles.
The doubles team of first-year Bobby Neuner (Darien, Conn. / Darien) and junior Mitchell Thomas (Houma, La. / Vandebilt Catholic) earned VaSID First Team All-State laurels, while Neuner also claimed first team honors in singles.
The tandem of junior Harry Shepherd (New York, N.Y. / St. George's School) and sophomore Noah Tapp (Lexington, Ky. / Henry Clay) garnered second team all-state recognition, while Shepherd also posted second team accolades in singles.
Neuner also received First Team All-ODAC honors in both singles and doubles during his rookie campaign. He logged a 22-3 singles mark while playing mostly the No. 3 position. In doubles, he went 18-7 overall and 17-7 when playing with Thomas at No. 1 singles.
Thomas was a First Team All-ODAC honoree in doubles, posting a 17-7 overall record. The 2019 ODAC Virginia Farm Bureau Insurance Scholar-Athlete of the Year, he also notched a 12-7 singles record while playing mostly Nos. 2-3 singles.
Shepherd and Tapp earned First Team All-ODAC honors at No. 2 singles, combining for a 12-3 record together. Shepherd notched a 17-8 overall record in doubles, while Tapp went 14-6 overall. In singles, Shepherd went 9-10 at the No. 1 position, and Tapp posted a 10-8 mark at Nos. 4-5. Shepherd was a Second Team All-ODAC honoree in singles as well.
Bridgewater first-year Canon Secord earned VaSID Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year honors, while Mary Washington's Todd Helbling was honored as the VaSID Coach of the Year.
W&L finished the 2019 season with a 15-8 overall record and an 11-0 conference mark. The Generals claimed the ODAC title for the 10th straight year and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament, before falling to third-ranked Emory, 5-0.
