W&L Men's Basketball Falls to Eastern Mennonite, 96-74

LEXINGTON, Va. — Eastern Mennonite shot 54.1 percent from the field on its way to a 96-74 victory over the Washington and Lee men's basketball team on Wednesday at the Warner Center.

The Royals (9-12, 6-9 ODAC) netted the first basket of the game, but the Generals (10-14, 3-12 ODAC) scored the next nine points, including four from senior forward Jok Asiyo (Stroudsburg, Pa./Pocono Mountain East), to grab a 9-2 lead by the 17:31 mark. Following a timeout, EMU responded with a 12-4 spurt to take a 14-13 lead with 12:44 left in the half.

Holding a 17-15 advantage with 9:38 remaining in the stanza, the Royals recorded 11 of the next 13 points to extend the lead to 28-17 by the 7:26 mark. After a layup by first-year guard Alex Starr (Upper Saddle River, N.J./Northern Highlands Regional), EMU first-year guard Khalil Davis (Harrisonburg, Va./Spotswood) scored five straight points to push the margin to 13 (33-20). Then sophomore wing Isaiah Harris-Winn (Frederick, Md./St. Maria Goretti) made a layup and notched two free throws to give the Royals a 37-20 lead with 4:33 left in the half.

Sophomore forward Clayton Murtha (Dallas, Texas/Highland Park) momentarily stopped the onslaught with a layup, but EMU scored the next five points to take a 20-point lead (42-22) with 3:02 before halftime. The two teams played even over the final three minutes, as the Royals held a 49-30 advantage at intermission.

Junior guard Andy Kleinlein (Chesterfield, Mo./Chaminade College Prep) opened the second half with a triple on each of the Generals' first two possessions, but the Royals answered each three-pointer with one of their own.

Following a three-pointer by sophomore wing Jerome Jones (Charles Town, W.Va./Washington), EMU held a 66-43 advantage with 15:53 left in the game. Asiyo and Murtha answered with back-to-back layups to trim the deficit to 19, 66-47, with 15:10 on the clock.

A Kleinlein three-pointer on the next possession brought W&L to within 16 (66-50), but the Royals put the Generals away with a 10-0 run over the next three minutes to take a 27-point lead, 77-50. W&L would eventually cut the lead down to 16 in the last two minutes before reaching the final margin. 

Harris-Winn scored a team-high 15 points to lead four Royals in double figures. Jerome Jones netted 13 points, while sophomore guard Maleke Jones (Charles Town, W.Va./Washington) and Davis each had 12.

Murtha led the Generals with a game-high 21 points. He also had five rebounds and four assists. Kleinlein ended the night with 15 points and shot 4-of-8 from beyond the arc.

EMU shot 54.1 percent (33-of-61) from the field, 50.0 percent (12-of-24) from three and 94.7 percent (18-of-19) from the foul line. W&L made 27-of-60 (45.0 percent) shots from the floor, 7-of-19 (36.8 percent) from long range and 13-of-19 (68.4 percent) from the charity stripe.

The Generals play their final game of the regular season on Saturday at Randolph at 2:00 pm.
